ABOUT THE WORK
There is a boat that every Puerto Rican in the diaspora knows. Not a real boat — but a feeling. The feeling of drifting between two shores, belonging fully to neither, searching for the course that leads back to the place that made you.
They left the island for the dream. The American Dream — steady work, better schools, a future the island couldn’t always promise. They packed what they could carry, said goodbye to the sea and the heat and the sound of the coqui at night, and headed north. To New York. To Ohio. To Hartford. Orlando or Philadelphia. They told themselves it was temporary. A few years. Just until things stabilize. Then we’ll go back.
But the years passed. The children grew up speaking English first. The mortgage got paid. The roots, reluctant at first, went down into new soil. And still — underneath everything, beneath the new life and the new address and the new normal — the current kept pulling. Southward. Toward the island. Toward the warm water and the mountains and the family and the food and everything that the word home really means when you say it in your heart.
