ABOUT THE WORK
They called it the storm. The Puerto Ricans who came to New York knew exactly what that meant.
It was the cold that hit you the moment you stepped off the plane at JFK — a cold that went beyond temperature, straight into the bones, straight into the soul. It was the subway, the sirens, the city that never slowed down long enough to let you catch your breath. It was learning a new language while holding onto the one that held your identity. It was working double shifts in factories, restaurants, and buildings that the city couldn’t run without — while fighting every day to be seen, to be heard, to belong.
The Nuyorican story is the story of a people who chose to stand en medio de la tormenta — in the middle of the storm — and refused to be swept away by it. They came from the island carrying everything they had: their music, their food, their Spanish, their pride, their unshakeable sense of who they were. And in the middle of the greatest, loudest, most indifferent city in the world, they built a culture. Loisaida. El Barrio. The Newyorican Poets Café. Salsa echoing down 110th Street. A Puerto Rico reimagined in concrete and fire escapes, but Puerto Rico nonetheless.
