ABOUT THE WORK
They bought a one-way ticket. And they never really came back.
Beginning in the 1940s and through the decades that followed, hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans boarded planes — and before that, ships — bound for New York City. They left behind the warmth of the island, the smell of the earth after rain, the sound of family gathered on a Sunday. They left behind everything familiar, everything safe, everything theirs. They carried one suitcase, a few photographs, and a dream so large it could only fit inside the largest city in the world.
The American Dream. That is what they called it. A better life. Better work. Better schools for the children. A future that the island, struggling under decades of economic hardship, could not guarantee. So they went. To El Barrio in East Harlem. To the South Bronx. To Brooklyn. To neighborhoods that became so thoroughly Puerto Rican that the island itself was rebuilt there — block by block, bodegas and bembés and the smell of sofrito drifting down fire escape stairs.
But the ticket was one-way. And that is the truth no one talks about enough. You leave the island — and something inside you never fully leaves. And when you go back — if you go back — something has shifted. The island has changed. You have changed. You are no longer completely from there, and you are never completely from here. You live in the space between two worlds, holding both, belonging fully to neither.
