ABOUT THE WORK
Puerto Rico holds two of the most extraordinary colors in the world — and both of them are impossible to fully believe until you’ve seen them yourself.
The first is the blue of the bioluminescent lagoon in La Parguera, Lajas. There is nothing else on earth quite like it. On moonless nights, the water there glows from within — a living, electric blue-green light produced by millions of microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates, stirred awake by every movement of the water. When you trail your hand through the surface, it lights up around your fingers. When a fish darts through the dark, it leaves a streak of cold fire behind it. It is a color that does not belong to the daytime world — ancient, otherworldly, and completely, unmistakably Puerto Rican.
The second is the palette of Old San Juan. Those cobblestone streets lined with buildings painted in every shade the Caribbean sun could dream up — coral and turquoise, saffron yellow and deep indigo, rose and mint and terracotta — facades that have held their color through centuries of history, through storms and sieges and the slow turn of time. The casitas of Viejo San Juan are not just architecture. They are a declaration: that this place is alive, that it is joyful, that it refuses to be dull or diminished or forgotten.
