ABOUT THE WORK
She stands at the entrance of New York Harbor, torch raised, welcoming everyone who arrives by sea — and for generations of Puerto Ricans making that crossing from the island, the Statue of Liberty was the first thing they saw as they entered the city that would become their second home.
There is a powerful, complicated irony in that image. A symbol of freedom — universal, luminous, impossible to ignore — greeting a people who arrived as American citizens but were never fully treated as equals. Who came looking for the promise that statue represented: opportunity, dignity, the right to build a life on their own terms. Who looked up at that torch and believed, because they had to believe, that what it stood for was meant for them too.
ROBGALAR draws from that image — and from the deeper question it raises — in this work. Freedom is not a reproduction of Lady Liberty.
