ABOUT THE WORK

There is a boat that every Puerto Rican in the diaspora knows. Not a real boat — but a feeling. The feeling of drifting between two shores, belonging fully to neither, searching for the course that leads back to the place that made you.

They left the island for the dream. The American Dream — steady work, better schools, a future the island couldn’t always promise. They packed what they could carry, said goodbye to the sea and the heat and the sound of the coqui at night, and headed north. To New York. To Ohio. To Hartford. Orlando or Philadelphia. They told themselves it was temporary. A few years. Just until things stabilize. Then we’ll go back.

But the years passed. The children grew up speaking English first. The mortgage got paid. The roots, reluctant at first, went down into new soil. And still — underneath everything, beneath the new life and the new address and the new normal — the current kept pulling. Southward. Toward the island. Toward the warm water and the mountains and the family and the food and everything that the word home really means when you say it in your heart.

ROBGALAR captures that drift in this work. A vessel without a fixed destination — not lost, but searching. Moving with purpose through open water, guided not by a map but by memory, by longing, by that deep ancestral pull that says: "you know the way. You have always known the way". The composition is at once solitary and full of life — the solitude of the crossing, and the richness of everything that waits at the end of it.

MI CAMINO DE VUELTA A CASA is for every Puerto Rican who has ever stood in the middle of a northern winter, closed their eyes, and heard the waves. For the one who still dreams in the language of the island even after decades away. For the one who finally went back — and for the one who is still finding their way there. And for the children of the diaspora, born far from the shore, who feel the pull without always knowing its name.

The beach is still there. The island is still there. And no distance — no matter how many years, no matter how many miles — has ever been able to change that.

Available in six sizes — from the intimate 12”×18” to the monumental 40”×60” — this work brings the open water and the quiet longing of that journey into any space. In its largest format, the horizon stretches wide enough to get lost in — and to find your way back from.

Printed on premium FSC-certified sustainable materials, each canvas delivers vibrant color and sharp detail built to last for decades. The pinewood frame and included mounting hardware make it ready to hang from the moment it arrives.
